TIMMONSVILLE -- The superintendent of Florence School District Four, Dr. Bertha McCants, will retire June 30th.
School Board Chairman Rose Bacote says the board asked McCants to reconsider, but says she decided to go forward with her decision to retire.
McCants announcement comes as the district is struggling financially. At one point, the district was nearly $700,000 in debt and had to cut 19 jobs in March.
Last week, an expert in school finance was asked to review the districts financial records to help them save money. Bacote says they received word that the district isn't in as bad of shape as they initially thought. They expect to end the year in good financial standing.
Bacote says the school board hasn't discussed looking for another superintendent. The school board meets tonight at 7 p.m.
McCants has been with the school district for about six years.
