Horry County school board members are expected to vote Monday night on whether on not to invite more than 3,000 teachers back for the 2011-2012 school year.
According to its website, Horry County Schools is made up of 48 schools within nine attendance areas. All together, the school district has 26 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, ten high schools, two career & technical academies, a Scholars Academy, and an alternative school.
School Board Member Joe DeFeo says that right now, the are four teachers on a "high risk" list, who might be getting cut because of budget shortfalls.
The board of education has received numerous budget presentations since January, where district finance officials were originally predicting a $50 million budget shortfall. Since then, that number has been drastically reduced to $1.5 million.
This is not the first time school board members have had to vote on cutting jobs to save money.
Back in 2002, 117 jobs were cut from Horry County Schools.
In 2009, the school board voted to eliminate 169 positions to save $10.4 million. Last year, DeFeo says one teacher was on the high risk list, but the board voted to let him or her remain teaching with the district.
He says he hopes the same will happen tonight.
"We need to protect our teachers, our good ones anyways." DeFeo added.
