Carolinas Hospital System says a patient tried to smoke a cigarette while on oxygen Thursday afternoon, starting a fire on the 9th floor.
Hospital staff put out the fire, but patients from that area were evacuated as a precaution.
Ken Carr, Fire Marshal/Public Information Officer for the City of Florence Fire Department, said in a press release, "The staff at Carolinas utilized their extensive training and reacted in an exemplary manner to ensure the safety of all staff and patients in the entire hospital."
Carolinas Hospital System is a nonsmoking campus.
We're still waiting to learn the condition of the patient who started the fire.
The patient had to be flown to the Augusta Burn Center in Georgia and is in critical condition.
