COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -- South Carolina legislators have delayed discussion of a proposal that would end unemployment benefits for people who fail or refuse to take job screening drug tests.

The Senate Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee had planned to discuss the measure on Thursday.

Legislators have tried for years to come up with a way of requiring drug tests to get jobless benefits, reintroducing the proposal this year.

But the state's role in requiring the tests has been a problem.

Proponents of this legislation get around that by telling prospective employers that they can report people who fail or refuse to take drug tests.
