Horry County Emergency Management (EMD) has been selected as the 2011 Emergency Management Agency of the Year by the South Carolina Emergency Management Association.

Horry County EMD was recognized during their Coastal Workshop in Litchfield Beach this week for their strides in helping their community deal with the recovery after a significant disaster and the county's acceptance into the Community Rating Service.

The CRS sets the premiums for flood insurance.

Horry County EMD lead the effort for Horry County being accepted into the CRS, which helps to set the rates of flood insurance throughout the unincorporated areas of the county.

The CRS program is sponsored through the federal government and provides a rating based on many parameters that describe the county's ability to deal with flooding waters and the mitigation efforts in place to reduce or eliminate losses from floods.
