CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - While their counterparts at other schools are enjoying sun and fun over spring break, a group of Citadel cadets is just getting the scorching sun.

Five cadets from the state military college in Charleston are joining about 5,000 other participants in New Mexico on Sunday for the Bataan Memorial Death March.

The march is a 26-mile hike through a scorching desert known for windstorms blowing dust at 30 mph.

The event is held each March to commemorate the servicemen who defended the Philippine Islands during World War II. In April 1942, tens of thousands of American and Filipino soldiers surrendered to Japanese forces and were forced to march through jungles where thousands died.

This week is spring break at The Citadel.
