CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (AP) - It's an annual rite of spring that signals summer is on its way - the opening of Britt's Donut Shop on the Carolina Beach boardwalk.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported that Britt's opens the last weekend of March and is open weekends only until Memorial Day when the sweet treats are sold seven days a week until summer's end.

Britt's has been open for 72 years - the same age as current owners Maxine and Bobby Nivens who have been married more than 50 years and have run the shop for 37. The shop's cooker makes three dozen doughnuts at a time and the old-school cash register still "rings" up orders.

Bobby Nivens considered starting a chain in 1974, but decided the short window of availability made the doughnuts special.
