The fire that burned 50 acres near Thomas Road started with an illegal trash burn, according to the Forestry Commission.

LITTLE RIVER -- Wednesday's brush fire that burned 50 acres from Little River into North Carolina started from an illegal trash burn, according to South Carolina Forestry Commission spokesman Scott Hawkins.
Hawkins says the person who burned the trash has been ticketed for the illegal burn, but we won't know the person's name for at least a day or two. The incident commander who handled the ticket is tied up fighting the wildfire that continues to burn at the Georgetown/Charleston County line.
The Little River fire, which was called in at 2:19 p.m., started near Thomas Road and eventually crossed over the SC/NC line. Forestry firefighters from both North and South Carolina and county fire departments from both states fought the fire.
Twenty to 30 homes were evacuated, but everyone returned to their homes after just a few hours. No one had to take advantage of a Red Cross shelter that opened, and no homes were lost or damaged.
The Forestry Commission offers tips and information on rules and regulations on its website. They remind you, if it grows on your property, you can burn it on your property, but household trash is illegal to burn.
