(AP) -- NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley will be moving this summer.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Monday officials at a lab in North Charleston plan to turn the submarine upright for the first time.

The first submarine to sink an enemy warship was pulled from the Atlantic Ocean off Sullivans Island in 2000 and officials have been working to preserve it. The sub has been in a cradle on its side since it was recovered.

The Hunley sank the blockading ship USS Housatonic in 1864, but the sub went down minutes later, killing its eight-member crew.

Officials don't know why the sub went down. Officials say turning the submarine upright should reveal any hull damage.

Mike Drews manages the lab and says plans are almost complete for the move.
