MYRTLE BEACH -- The Transportation Association of South Carolina is meeting in Myrtle Beach for its annual conference and supplier exhibition.
Monday begins the event's opening session where attendees will hear from local, state and federal speakers.
US Department of Transportation Deputy Administrator Therese McMillan says President Barack Obama plans to double the federal transit administration budget. In 2010, there was $11 billion in the budget. In 2012, he wants $22 billion. McMillan says the president believes transportation creates jobs and it helps people get to those jobs. It's also one of the many ways President Obama hopes we can climb out of the recession, McMillan says.
Conference officials say the event provides important training, networking opportunities and showcases the latest in industry products and services.
The transportation industry will discuss new and ongoing legislation, programs and challenges for public transportation.
The conference ends Wednesday and is held at the Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort.
