A group of a dozen snowbirds from several Eastern states look forward to more than warm temperatures when they flock to the Grand Strand. The women are dedicated to making and selling crafts, then donating the proceeds to a local charity.
"I made lemon cupcakes, brownies, cookies and buttermilk biscuits," said Marilyn Sultar of Rochester, NY.
Sultar is the newest member of the craft group that started four years ago. "The biggest seller was the baked potato bags," Sultar added. On Friday, she sold her goodies with the rest of the women at the Water's Edge Resort in Garden City.
All of the money raised will be donated to South Strand Helping Hand. "We don't have a goal in mind. We like doing it and we know it's going to someone else," Mary Helen McNeil from Water's Edge Resort said.
The women are selling crafts in the lounge on the lower level of the Water's Edge Resort until 3 p.m. Friday.
"We use our own money to buy the supplies and we just don't think of it as sacrifice. It's our part of doing something good," McNeil added.
Last year they raised more than $700.
"It's been very successful, and the best part is it gives us something to do during the winter that's fun and it's something to do with our hands," McNeil added.
