Horry County Animal Care Center officials held an Adopt-a-Thon event with more than 50 cats up for adoption Saturday afternoon.
Margaret Lansberg and her husband were among the nearly 40 people that came out to the event at the county's holding facility off River Road in Socastee.
"They deserve a good chance at life and hopefully they're all going to get that," she said.
Earlier this month Horry County officials seized 237 cats from Sacred Vision Animal Sanctuary after an undercover investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Later, the county euthanized 107 of those animals for medical reasons.
The adoption fees were $25 per cat and the cost included a microchip, one year Rabies vaccine and 30 days of free pet health insurance.
A licensed veterinarian examined all of the cats eligible for adoption. They also received antibiotic therapy.
Many are still being held and treated after today. Officials say they are still too ill to be put in a home.
"We are going to adopt them eventually, but we want to make sure all of the healthy cats get adopted first," says Horry County Operation Manager Kelly Bonome. "Nothing is going to happen to them, and they're still getting a lot of good care are treatment, but they're going to need special homes."
Elizabeth Owen, owner of Sacred Vision Animal Sanctuary, and her attorney agreed to let the cats be adopted.
