CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Charlotte runners plan to put all those hours on the stair machine to good use as they race to the top of the city's second-tallest building, the 52 story Duke Energy Center.
The Charlotte Observer reported Saturday that 100 people have already signed up for the March 26 race up 1,194 steps.
Runners will go off in waves of 50 at 15-second intervals. A good runner is expected to finish in 10 minutes or less.
Personal trainer Michael Beacham came up with the idea as a benefit for the American Lung Association after his father died of emphysema in 2007.
The race is a first for Charlotte. Chicago's Willis Tower hosts a race that is twice as long.
