UPDATE:

Captain Andy Locklair, with the Darlington County Sheriff's Office, says the brush fire that was threatening mobile homes in the Turnpike Road area is now almost completely contained.

Residents who were asked to voluntarily evacuate are welcome to return home.

The only area still closed is Turnpike at Highway 340 and Turnpike at Anderson Farm Road.

Fire officials are not sure how the fire started.

It was called in around 1:30 p.m.

Story posted at 3:40 p.m.

Captain Andy Locklair, with the Darlington County Sheriff's Office, says firefighters are battling a large brush fire at a mobile home park on Turnpike Road in Darlington.

He says as a precaution their asking residents in the area to voluntarily leave their homes if they live on Dingo Lane or High Cotton Road.

Locklair says all fire departments in the county and the SC Forestry Commission are responding to the fire.

Forestry has crews on the ground and in the air working to put out the fire.

We're waiting to learn in the Pee Dee Chapter of the American Red Cross is setting up a shelter for the evacuees.

The Darlington County Public Spokesman, Lynnwood Epps, tells us he's on his way to the fire to assess the situation and set up a command post if necessary.

School buses that were taking children home to the area are not able to head down East Ebenezer Road, North Rogers, Turnpike Road, Anderson Farm, High Cotton or Dingo Lane.

Those students are being taken back to their schools, where they can be picked up by parents.

We will keep you updated on this story as soon as more information is available.
