(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - An engineering firm and the company that runs a former nuclear weapons site will announce a gift to establish a Center of Economic Excellence at the University of South Carolina.
USC has scheduled a news conference for Monday to discuss the gift from Texas-based Fluor Corp. and Aiken-based Savannah River Nuclear Solutions.
The Centers of Economic Excellence are also known as the endowed chairs program. It was begun in 2002 and is funded by proceeds from the state lottery.
The program allows research universities to raise money from the private sector to fund endowments for professorships in research areas targeted to create well-paying jobs.
