Horry County Solicitor Greg Hembree has requested Sacred Vision Animal Sanctuary turn over more than 300 cats to the county.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals went undercover into the sanctuary and gave Hembree's office a 42-page report, plus a video from inside the sanctuary. Thursday evening, the solicitor decided to take steps to remove the animals PETA says are being mistreated.
"A notice will be served to Elizabeth Owen today," says Hembree. Owen runs the sanctuary.
Magistrate Judge Bradley Mayers is scheduled to hear the request on March 1. Until then, Owen will keep the animals.
Greg McCollum, Owen's defense attorney, plans to ask the judge to personally come to the sanctuary before he rules on the matter.
"We plan to show the judge these animals are being treated humanely at the sanctuary," says McCollum.
NewsChannel 15 will have a look inside the sanctuary Friday afternoon. Watch NewsChannel 15 tonight at 6 p.m. to see the facility.
