A resident of Conway has filed an appeal of a proposed expansion of the Horry County landfill. The move will hold up the permitting process by 60 to 90 days.
The Solid Waste Authority received a tentative expansion permit from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control on Jan. 31. Resident Fred Schlick filed an appeal within 15 days of that date, which blocks the expansion permit from becoming official.
DHEC now has up to 60 days to schedule a hearing. If it does and Schlick's objection is upheld, the SWA has 30 days to appeal to an administrative law court.
The SWA has spent about $500,000 on the permitting process up to this point.
Currently, the landfill on Highway 90 accepts 300,000 tons of garbage, but SWA officials say an expansion is necessary to meet future trash needs. However, some who oppose the expansion say the mound of trash would be able to be seen from the beach.
