Horry County Fire Rescue and Myrtle Beach Fire Department units responded to a fire in the Cape Landing Apartment complex located off Highway 17 near the intersection of Palmetto Pointe Blvd 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
According to Leslie Yancey, spokesman for Horry County Fire Rescue, a balcony in building 3765 caught fire and spread to the apartment unit. No one was hurt. There was a cat in the unit that needed to be rescued. In all, three families were displaced.
The two lower floors sustained water damage.
The family who had been renting the unit tells NewsChannel 15 that everyone affected by the fire is staying with relatives.
Yancey can't say if the fire was related to a recent string of brush fires.
South Carolina is right in the middle of brush fire season. Heavy winds, dry air, and low humidity means greater chances for brush fires that get out of hand very quickly.
Horry County Fire Rescue reported more than 20 brush fire calls on Saturday.
