NewsChannel 15 has learned the Marlboro County School District has to pay back nearly $100,000 to the State Department of Education.
In October, the department began investigating the district after finding discrepancies during an audit in 2009 of federal funds spent by the district.
It involved scholarship money provided for teachers to take online classes between 2005 and 2007.
The district hired an independent firm to conduct a more detailed audit.
State Department of Education officials say their findings show that several teachers didn't qualify for the classes under federal guidelines.
The district has until March 1st to return the money.
State police are also looking into this situation to determine if there was any criminal wrongdoing.
There will be a board meeting held next week to address the audit. We'll let you know when a date is set for the meeting.
