Red Cross shelter for evacuees of Agrium fertilizer plant fire in Hartsville
State and local officials have praised the American Red Cross' response to the Agrium Fertilizer plant fire Monday night in Hartsville.
Within two hours of the fire, the Pee Dee Chapter of the Red Cross had opened a shelter for evacuees.
They quickly helped to get food to the shelter, as well as to the 200 emergency workers on scene at the fire.
Shelter officials say they had no time to prepare, but had to quickly react.
They say it takes money to adequately respond to disaster situations.
"We've got to have the money in place to be able to do this. We can't do it without the funding. We really need the support. We have recently regionalized our chapters, so it's been really important that we're able to pull our resources from other areas, from Columbia, Myrtle Beach, from Rock Hill," said Linda Boone-Smith with the Pee Dee Chapter.
