The Marion Fire Department dedicated its new fire station Sunday, the second in the city.

The city began planning for the new station three years ago, and then it took ten months to construct the facility.

Fire Station II cost $580,000 and was built on land donated by the family of the late McCoy Richardson, a former volunteer firefighter for the city.

The new station is on Sen. Gasque Road. It will house two fire trucks and a full time firefighter. The city hopes the addition will improve response time to citizens and business owners on the west side of Marion, which should lower insurance costs, according to the city.

$500,000 of the cost came from a Community Development Block Grant. $50,000 came from a USDA Rural Development Grant and matching money from the city. About 150 people attended the Sunday dedication.
