A relatively new cat shelter, Save-R-Cats is asking for the community's aid. They held a fundraising dinner Sunday afternoon at Beef O'Bradys of Highway 17. Fifteen percent of the purchases went to the shelter, which runs solely on donations.
"This replenishes {us} and gets the information out and helps the public understand what we do and how we do it," adoption center manager Shirley Major said.
"It helps us tremendously with the food, and the litter, and the spay and neutering," added Board member Ted Sedja.
The group also held a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. The no kill shelter has only been in existance since 2002, with an adoption center opening in Surfside in 2005. The adoption center houses more than 60 cats at a time. Many of the animals come from litters from feral cats that the non profit has since sterilized.
"Sometimes we get down and our little bank account is like all the way at the bottom," Major said.
Save-R-Cats organizers say they're always looking for more people to join their group of 17 volunteers.
They also hold adoption events at the Petsmart in Myrtle Beach. They are currently adopting out cats there until the 27th of this month.
