MYRTLE BEACH -- Some Myrtle Beach city leaders want to increase parking meter rates as early as this spring.
The meters haven't gone up yet, but current rates are 75 cents to a $1.25 depending on the area. The Downtown Redevelopment Corporation wants to charge an extra quarter an hour on the meters.
The owner of Cool Daddy's Bar and Grill says his customers complain constantly about parking meters. "I think with all the businesses down here, we're paying one and a half percent tax to the city as it is and I think there's other ways they can raise revenue," said Phil Salone.
The proposed increase in parking rates would raise an estimated $250,000 to be used for downtown projects.
The city council would have to approve an increase.
