Three years ago, the City of Myrtle Beach lowered the maximum vehicle noise allowed to 89 decibels from 99, as part of an effort to cut down on issues relating to two annual motorcycle rallies.
Now, they're considering changing the ordinance again. The proposed ordinance would require that most motor vehicles not exceed 92 decibels with the engine idling. The measurements are taken 20 inches from the exhaust pipe.
Myrtle Beach Public Information Officer Mark Kruea says the higher level is in line with industry standards.
The city council's second look comes after Horry County hotel owners and motorcycle groups sued over the 2008 ordinance.
According to one audio website, motorcycle's emit about 100 decibels. To give you a comparison, a whisper in a quiet library is about 30 decibels, a flute is between 92 and 103 decibels, and a loud rock concert is about 115 decibels.
Should Myrtle Beach relax the noise ordinance to allow higher decibel levels? Or should they continue to keep them at a quieter level? Leave your comment below.
