There are pros and cons when it comes to building an offshore wind turbine field in South Carolina, and there's no shortage of opinions when it comes to the benefits of erecting massive turbines off the Grand Strand coast.
While some may say it would be an eyesore to see these large turbines in the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean, there is the potential for a major industry to blow into the Palmetto State.
As the U.S. increasingly turns to and explores the benefits of alternative energy, wind energy is an industry that South Carolina could be the first on the east coast to capitalize on.
"It could mean a lot of different things for South Carolina," said Nicole Aiello, spokesperson for Santee Cooper, who is currently researching the benefits of wind energy. "It could actually mean a boom for tourism," added Aiello.
Although, some fear the opposite, that the "eyesore" created by the massive turbines would litter the natural landscape of the South Carolina coast.
Tuesday and Wednesday at 6 p.m. on NewsChannel 15, Meteorologist Mallory Nicholls finds out what different industries might be attracted to South Carolina if a wind turbine field was to be constructed offshore.
Also on Wednesday right here on CarolinaLive.com, we will take a more in-depth look at the impact of an offshore wind farm.
