Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee identified the inmate who died in the Darlington County Detention Center Monday night as Nyerere Deon Brown, 20, of Darlington.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating Brown's death. The coroner says it appears his death was natural. But an autopsy is being performed to determine the exact cause.

Jail officers found Brown unresponsive at around 9:15 p.m. Monday during hourly bed checks. The on-duty nurse was called to the cell block, as well as EMS. Brown was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Cpt. Andy Locklair says Brown was in the detention center on charges of armed robbery, pointing or presenting a firearm, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and breach of peace.
