BENNETTSVILLE -- Tuesday afternoon, Judge Michael Baxley denied bond for Vontrell Canty, 21, of Bennettsville, who's accused of stealing the identities of about 40 people in Marlboro County.
Investigators say used others' personal information to buy items such as electronics. Many of the victims learned their credit information was stolen after getting letters from credit agencies that someone had opened accounts in their names.
Prosecutors tell us people are still coming forward to report that they have been victimized. Several of the victims showed up at Canty's bond hearing Tuesday afternoon to say how the crimes have financially hurt them.
Prosecutors say it's possible federal authorities could look into this case.
Canty also faces a charge of criminal domestic violence in an unrelated incident.
He's being held at the Marlboro County Detention Center.
