NORTH CHARLESTON (AP) -- North Charleston police say an officer charged with drunken driving no longer works for the department.

Police spokesman Spencer Pryor says 25-year-old Nicholas Lomma of Summerville had been with the department since 2008. Pryor would not say anything else about Lomma's status, saying it was a personnel matter.

SC Highway Patrol says Lomma's police cruiser was found wrecked in Colleton County around 8 a.m. Saturday. The Highway Patrol says

Lomma drove into a ditch on state Highway 28 around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

He told a trooper he swerved to avoid a deer. Troopers charged Lomma with driving under the influence. It was unclear if he has an attorney.
