Marlboro County man died in crash in Laurinburg, North Carolina.

North Carolina Highway Patrol says Thursday morning, Eugene Williams, 27, of McColl was heading to Aberdeen, North Carolina for a doctors appointment.

Trooper John Martin says he fell asleep at the wheel on US 15, seven miles north of Laurinburg.

He says Williams ran off the road, hit a tree and his SUV burst into flames.

A truck driver traveling behind him saw the crash and tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher, but it didn't help. Williams died on the scene.

Trooper Martin says he leaves behind three children and was expected to get married next month.
