(AP) -- Some state senators want to put the brakes on using cameras to catch speeders on Interstate 95 in Jasper County.
The State of Columbia reports that lawmakers said Wednesday that the town of Ridgeland is breaking South Carolina law. The town has used cameras to issue more than 8,000 tickets since last summer.
State Sen. Larry Grooms of Bonneau (Bah-NO) told Mayor Gary Hodges the law prohibits tickets being issued based only on photographs.
But Hodges says the cameras are reducing traffic deaths and there is an officer in a vehicle monitoring when the camera records speeders.
The subcommittee approved Grooms' bill banning tickets based on photos and requiring police to give tickets to drivers within an hour of a violation. Ridgeland now mails the speeding tickets.
