A police team trained for special operations is learning a new technique to defend themselves.
The Florence County Sheriff's Office SWAT team is learning the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's a form of martial arts that focuses on hand-to-hand combat.
Instructors at Swamp Fox Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Florence have been training the deputies for a few weeks. Officers hope the techniques will help them avoid using deadly force when they're struggling with a suspect.
"It's just a matter of how to escape and getting yourself in a better situation," said Tim Jones, Swamp Fox Jiu-Jitsu.
Jones adds this form of martial arts is now widely used by law enforcement officers across the country and is very effective in overpowering a suspect.
