Overdue books lead to police summons for some

What's long overdue, is creating some problems for a Grand Strand library and some library patrons.

Staff at Chapin Memorial Library are forced to issue a summons for overdue library material several times a month. The next step is for police to get involved. The library director at Chapin, Briget Livingston, says patrons with overdue material can pay a fee and return the item or pay a replacement cost. But, she says, some ignore both of those options and simply do not pay or return the items. "Well, it's best for the overall community if they return the materials. We have holds and requests and new materials that cant go to the next person if they're held too long. We may have to buy and repurchase some materials that we wouldn't ordinarily have to."

Livingston says the library is often willing to work with patrons if they take an active interest in returning the overdue material.
