(AP) -- Authorities say a 9-year-old McCormick girl was killed by a dog her grandfather bought for his grandchildren.
McCormick County Coroner Faye Puckett said Kristen Dutton was attacked about 6:30 p.m. Saturday while visiting her grandfather's McCormick home.
Puckett says the 98-pound Japanese Akita bit the girl in the neck and she died at a hospital shortly afterward.
The coroner says Kristen was outside alone with the dog when it attacked.
Puckett says the girl had walked the dog earlier in the day. The grandfather had bought the pet three weeks ago for his grandchildren.
Authorities say the state Department of Health and Environmental Control was picking up the dog Monday to euthanize it and check for rabies.
