(AP) -- The latest battle lines in the South Carolina General Assembly don't seem to be Republican vs. Democrat, but rather school kids against The Balloon Council.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the council is a group of balloon companies that plan to fight proposed restrictions on the release of balloons into the air.

The school children first proposed the idea, saying balloons escape and can kill loggerhead sea turtles and other wildlife after bits of balloons are eaten.

The council says rubber balloons biodegrade and are relatively harmless, as long as they are released without strings.

Not all conservationists agree.

The Sea Turtle Foundation estimates that 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die each year after eating marine debris.
