A passerby found the body of Rickey Herndon, 38, alongside Catfish Church Road in Dillon County, Monday morning.
Deputies tell us Herndon is from the Blythewood area near Columbia. At this point, investigators believe he was killed in Dillon County.
Police say relatives identified Herndon's body late Tuesday afternoon. Detectives are trying to trace his last known whereabouts.
They know how Herndon was murdered, but say they aren't releasing the information for investigative reasons.
State police helped process the crime scene and are working with the Dillon County Sheriff's Office.
