One week from now, the Arcelor Mittal steel plant in Georgetown will be back in operation.
More than 180 steelworkers will be on the job, about 18 months after the mill was shut down due to a drop in the demand for steel.
Last summer, union workers voted to accept lower wages in an effort to reopen the plant and in late September, the company announced the market for steel had improved enough that the mill could reopen.
One worker who's happy to be going back to work says this time, he believes the plant will keep running for awhile. "This company put a whole lot of money into reopening this plant and if they didn't have a plan to keep it open, I don't think they would have even decided to start back," said Tupelo Holmes.
The plant employed around 250 workers when it closed in July of 2009. Back in May, we reported that many industry analysts were doubtful the plant would ever re-open.
