January 17th is Martin Luther King, Junior Day. But it's also the 2nd anniversary of Jeremy and Stephanie Hewett.
On this day, Jeremy, an IT tech in the Army, sent a surprise to his bride, who lives in Little River with their 2 year old son, Addison. We were there as a truck from Buds and Blooms Florist pulled up outside Jeremy and Stephanie's home, delivering flowers and a special video message.
Stephanie Hewett popped in the DVD and was treated to a special song, written and performed by Jeremy. A fellow soldier played guitar. She cried throughout the song and couldn't wait to call Jeremy to say thank you and wish him a happy anniversary.
She reached Jeremy in Afghanistan and told him, "I miss you, I love you, and I wish you were here."
Jeremy has been in Afghanistan for the past 6 months. Stephanie says she hopes their story will remind people that the men and women serving in places like Afghanistan are not just "soldiers." They are fathers, husbands, brothers, sisters... they are family to someone.
Specialist Hewett says he expected to make his wife smile with the anniversary video, but didn't realize it would be so uplifting to his fellow troops.
"It surprisingly lifting moral a lot." he says. "There are days when you have to be serious but it helps moral because everyone likes a laugh. I'm always good for it."
