Firefighters in Georgetown County are learning how to rescue workers who are buried in dirt.

The trench rescue training has been going on this week at Midway Fire-Rescue Department in Pawleys Island.

Firefighters learn how to install devices to shore up the sides of a trench and then, how to dig a victim out of the mud.

This week, they had to train in cold and snowy weather. But the trainers say, that provided some good real-world experience.

"If it's 3 in the morning or 3 in the afternoon, it's bright and sunny in the summer, or snowing in the winter, we have to be prepared at all times to handle these emergencies," Firefighter Bob Beebe told NewsChannel 15.

Beebe says about 20 Fire and EMS personnel from Midway and Georgetown County went through the training. They will become part of a county-wide technical rescue team.
