(AP) -- A South Carolina lawmaker says colleges and universities should be required to turn over records on disruptive and threatening students who drop out to help avoid tragedies like the recent shooting in Tucson, Ariz.

State Rep. Chip Limehouse said Friday his bill is being drafted and will be introduced next week when the Legislature returns.

Limehouse says the legislation isn't more of an intrusion on rights than federal do-not-fly lists or state sex offender registries. He says it will allow police to connect the dots to avoid tragedies.

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others were shot last Saturday at an event she hosted for constituents. Six died, including a 9-year-old girl.
