The state Department of Transportation tells NewsChannel 15 crews have cleared snow and ice from 99 percent of the primary roads, US Highways and Interstates in the Pee Dee and affected areas of Horry County.
They're in the process of salting many of the secondary roads. Dozens of those roads are still covered in ice. That's why several schools canceled classes again Wednesday.
DOT says it ran out of salt in Marlboro County Tuesday morning after putting 260 tons of salt on the roads since last Friday. They got 56 tons from DOT facilities in Florence and Georgetown Counties and put it out overnight.
School district leaders in Florence, Darlington and Marlboro Counties are working with DOT to find out how clear the roads are to determine if school buses will be able to safely travel on the roads Thursday.
They will make a decision Wednesday afternoon on whether to open schools Thursday.
