COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's two days under a snow blanket brought joy to some, but headaches for people whose jobs depend on good weather and others who rely on home-delivered meals.
Schools in the northern half of the state planned to cancel classes for a third day on Wednesday, while others opted for a delayed start in the hopes of a thaw.
The snow and ice have caused thousands of wrecks, including one fatality, since the storm hit South Carolina late Sunday night.
Authorities say 49-year-old Jerry Lee Smith of Greenwood died early Monday after his car slid off a snow-covered road and into an embankment.
Counties in the northwestern corner of the state got the worst of the storm, which dropped a layer of freezing rain on top of as much as nine inches of snow.
Continued cold temperatures made it hard to clear roads.
