(AP) -- A South Carolina man has died after his car slid off a snowy road in Greenwood and into a ditch.

Greenwood County Chief Deputy Coroner Marcia Kelley-Clark said Tuesday that 49-year-old Jerry Lee Smith died Sunday night.

Kelley-Clark says Smith died from chest trauma at a local hospital after he was thrown from his car.

Thousands of accidents have been reported across the state since the snow, sleet and rain began Sunday night.

The National Weather Service continued winter weather advisories in northwestern South Carolina through noon Wednesday because of problems with black ice on the roads.

Similar advisories were in effect for the rest of the state until about midday Tuesday because of a possibility of freezing drizzle and the hazardous travel conditions.
