Governor Mark Sanford issued a State of Emergency in all 46 counties Monday. He urges you to avoid travel and watch weather updates.

The governor says the State of Emergency will "allow state and local officials maximum flexibility in clearing and treating roads, bring additional resources to the Department of Public Safety to assist stranded motorists, and that ensure utilities have the greatest leeway in managing any possible power outages."

Conditions are expected to gets worse as the day progresses.

"Given the current conditions throughout the state, I would urge the state's citizens to avoid all unnecessary travel," Gov. Sanford said. "I'd also thank the many state and local officials -- especially those at the Emergency Management Division, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Public Safety -- working around the clock to assist stranded citizens, clear roads, and provide shelter to those most affected by the storm."

The Governor's Office is urging citizens to stay tuned to local media for updates on travel and weather conditions.

Here's the latest from First Alert Chief Meteorologist Ed Piotrowski.

Here's what the state has provided so far:

  1. - 357 law enforcement personnel from SCHP, SLED and the Department of Natural Resources are deployed and responding to incidents.
  2. - Wrecker teams made up of 120 National Guard soldiers have been placed on active duty to assist local responders and state agencies. These crews will assist in vehicle accidents and roadway clearing.
  3. - The National Guard Armory in Allendale County has been opened as a warming shelter for those needing a place to stay warm. S.C. Department of Social Services staff, American Red Cross and Salvation Army volunteers are standing by to operate shelters should they become necessary.
  4. - The State Emergency Operations Center remains at Operation Condition 3, staffed with members of the State Emergency Response Team
