(AP) -- South Carolina legislators return to Columbia this week to deal with a new governor and a wreck of a budget.

Legislators say the looming $829 million budget shortfall will get most of the attention because it will effect school and Medicaid spending.

Lawmakers say they are hopeful about working with Gov.-elect Nikki Haley, a three-term Republican House member who becomes the state's first woman governor.

For the first time, the GOP will control every statewide elected office and both legislative chambers. Republicans now have more House seats than ever.

That Republican majority will work on redrawing district lines for legislators and mapping a new seventh U.S. House district in South Carolina.
