The news of the attack on Representative Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims including a child and a federal judge dominated headlines today.
Local leaders issued statements on the deadly incident.
Newly elected Congressman Tim Scott said, "I was saddened and horrified to learn of the senseless shooting of Congresswoman Giffords and other innocent people today. I ask all those who receive this to pray for Gabrielle, the other victims, their families, her staff and all residents of Arizona. I hope that law enforcement acts swiftly to bring this perpetrator to justice. This is a very sad day for our country."
While Assistant Democratic leader James Clyburn said, "My prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff and the other victims of the shooting this morning, as well as their families and friends. This act of violence weighs heavily on my heart and my mind as information continues to unfold about this mindless attack. Whether through words or weapons, violence has no place in our democracy and all of us have a responsibility to foster a climate in which we can exchange ideas and views passionately but peacefully."
