(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina National Guard is getting its first female general.

Guard officials say Col. Darlene Goff will be promoted to brigadier general Friday. Adjutant General Stanhope Spears will present the star to Goff at a special ceremony in Columbia.

She serves as an assistant adjutant general and as vice chief of staff for the Joint Staff of South Carolina's Military Department.

The native of Ninety-Six has been in the military for 34 years.

Goff graduated from the Palmetto Military Academy and has degrees from Lander University, Webster University and the U.S. Army War College.
