The Surfside Beach Planning Commission is considering a zoning amendment that could make it nearly impossible to open a strip club or sex shop.

Currently, there are no strip clubs in Surfside, but there are lingerie and adult stores on 17 Bypass near Surfside in pockets of unincorporated Horry County. There are some 20 gentleman's clubs and topless bars in Horry County, Myrtle Beach, and North Myrtle Beach combined.

Surfside Beach Planning Commission Chairman Charles Seibold says the restriction is to keep in line with Surfside's "Family Beach" reputation.

The adult nightclub industry in South Carolina brings in $40 million in tax revenue every year.
