Florence firefighters say a space heater caused the fire that killed four dogs.

An apartment over a garage on North Coit Street caught fire Monday evening.

Alonzo Johnson lived in the home. He tells NewsChannel 15 he went across the street to the store, when he saw smoke and heard his dogs barking. He ran back to save them, but says the flames were too much.

"It hurt me to my heart. I cried all night. Cried all night cause I loved my dogs," Johnson said.

Johnson also lost the rest of his belongings.
