According to the First Alert Weather Team, initially tonight road surfaces will be above freezing. But as the rate of snowfall increases and temperatures drop, snow will possibly accumulate on road surfaces inland.
If that happens, roads may become very hazardous, snow covered and icy. Travel is not recommended late tonight and Sunday. Untreated roadways could remain icy into Monday.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation says they're ready, with crews on standby. DOT has ten dump trucks ready to spread up to 200 tons of salt and a sodium chloride brine mixture.
There are 1,400 miles of roads just in Horry County that DOT has to maintain. Crews work in 12 hour shifts once the snow starts falling.
Crews work on a priority system, major highways like 501 and roads to hospitals take top concern. If the roads gets too bad for DOT to handle alone, they can call on Horry County Public works and private contractors to help out.
DOT is saying more than anything, if you don't have to go anywhere Sunday, stay off the roads.
