(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's frugal Gov. Mark Sanford has been spreading cash to cheer charities.
Sanford says he has donated $250,000 in excess campaign cash to the Coastal Community Foundation in Charleston. In October Sanford had more than $1 million left in his gubernatorial campaign account. The money can only be spent on another state campaign or given to a charity or to the state.
Sanford said in an interview last week that he hopes the donation ends up helping in land conservation. That's been a key quality-of-life issue for him during his two terms.
He's not alone among governors giving cash to charity. West Virginia's Joe Manchin gave $740,000 to charities last year. He left office in November after winning a U.S. Senate seat.
